Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by pain in your muscles, ligaments and tendons, fatigue and multiple tender points, places on your body where slight pressure causes pain. It is more common in women than in men. It is not progressive or life-threatening, but the symptoms may, probably, never disappear completely. Treatments as well as self care can improve fibromyalgia symptoms and your general health.

Symptoms of fibromyalgia can vary depending on the stress, physical activity, weather and in different times in a day and they include:

• Widespread pain
• Fatigue and sleep disturbances
• Headaches and facial pains
• Increased sensitivity to noise, light, odours and even touch
• Irritable bowel syndrome
• Depression
• Anxiety
• Painful menstrual periods

It is not known which causes fibromyalgia, but the current theory is that people with fibromyalgia have a lower threshold for pain because of increased sensitivity in the brain to receive the pain signals.

If you are diagnosed to fibromyalgia, your doctor will decide the different drugs you need to reduce the symptoms and to have a good sleep.

Self care is very important in fibromyalgia; reduce your stress, exercise regularly, have enough sleep, keep your daily activities in balance and maintain a peaceful and healthy life style.

Are the environment factors playing a role here? Research must answer this.

Meditation or yoga is very useful here.
