What is Cancer?

The body is made up of many types of cells, the body’s basic unit of life. When cells become old or damaged, they die and are replaced with new cells. The cells grow and divided in a controlled way to produce more cells according to the needs of the body to be healthy.

Sometimes DNA, the genetic material of a cell can become damaged or changed producing mutations which affect normal cell growth and division. In this case the old cells will not die, but new cells are formed which are not needed by the body. These extra cells may form a mass of tissue called a tumour.

The abnormal and uncontrolled cell division is called cancer and it is a very serious disease. These cancer cells are able to invade other body tissues. Through the blood and lymph systems they can spread to other parts of the body.

There are more than 100 different types of cancer. Most of the cancers are called in the of the affected organ or type of cell in which they start, for example, cancer that begins in the breast is called breast cancer; Basal cell carcinoma begins in basal cells of the skin.

The main categories of cancer include:

• Leukemia – cancer which starts in blood-forming tissues such as the bone marrow
• Lymphoma and myeloma – cancers that begin in the cells of the immune-system
• Carcinoma – cancer that begins in the skin or in tissues that line or cover the internal organs
• Sarcoma – cancer that begins in bone, cartilage, fat, muscle, blood vessels or other connective or supportive tissue
• Central nervous system cancers – cancers that begin in the tissues of the brain and spinal cord.

Healthy food and a good lifestyle can reduce the risk of cancers.

  2. Dear Dr. KP.,

Can you explain me doctor, the circumstances under which cancer developed (there are so many social life behavior etc. all these apart). Is it safer to remove the organs that affected severely by cancer development and with that, implant of organs.

Doctor, your inference to the latest adoption of stem cell growth at clinical and lab levels and use it in the surgery of cancer is sought for, please.

Recently a year or two ago, one University student who was suffering from cancer, treated in SRMC in Chennai and sent to Singapore. In these process his case was successful even to say that, this may not recur as the cancer cells fully taken away. Thanks to the Singapore doctors and the doctors of SRMC Chennai and the cooperation of the student.

These findings are the outcome only after long study and research by the doctors' team in India and abroad.According to them, they released this
to press, on seeing the overwhelming response in the patient's body and medicinal therapies. They have scheduled this diagnosis that,it will take about 2,3 years. They succeeded at last.Wow, how the miracles stem cell has with it.Can it go wider to cure other
    parts of body ailments?

Finally thank God and the doctors' team, we got the student back to normal healthy body as before, and his treatment and immune system of his body responded well and he is now out of danger completely.

Is such treatment possible among kids ranging 1 to 5,6 years. Normally doctors say stem cell therapy is costly and are done now only with very few experimental methods and once the research developed further, this would reach all over the world.

What are the precautions used to preserve stem cell in labs and hospitals, doctor?

Sorry to take your time, but still the awareness on the miracles of stem cell can also be known to every one.

    Thanks and Regards,

  3. There are many risk factors to get cancer, heredity, processsed food, lifestyle, smoking, drinking, chemicals, hormnes in food environmental pollution, radiation are few to mention. We could avoid many risk factors if we know exactly what a risk factr is. That means we must inform the people about these dangers. Are we doing it? Not 100% as there are many other interest like profit etc.

Stem cell research is wonderful, but we should not forget the moral side of it. You know about these strong pro and contra discussions. At first it must be defined when the life starts exactly.

Miracles do happen in our world. There are mild forms of cancer and there are very aggressive cancers. The chance of geting better is different to every individual depending upon his body's ability to fight and mental power. There are treatments which help. But the recent costly medicines produced by the pharmaceutical companies are not so good as they promised. Health is a big business.

The earlier it is dignosed one has a great chance against cancer.
