The uncontrolled growth of cells in any part of the body is cancer. It is a group of disease. Cancer kills millions of people every year in our world. Few can be curable if diagnosed in the early stages. We can do a lot to minimize the risk of cancer. The hereditary risk factor is only about 5% to 10%. The rest comes from our lifestyle, diet and environment. We see here the many ways to reduce the cancer risks.

Many people know that heavy alcohol consumption can cause health problems. Interestingly, many people do not know that alcohol can increase the cancer risk. Alcohol is definitely a risk factor for cancers. Research has clearly established the link between alcohol consumption and the risk for developing cancers. If more alcohol is drunk the risk is correspondingly high. The exact mechanism is not yet clear. It may be because alcohol can alter the hormone levels or make the liver not to metabolize certain cancer producing substances so that the healthy cells are vulnerable to cancer. We can compare this with the adverse effects of tobacco.

The risk may include the cancer of:

• Breast in women
• Colon
• Esophagus
• Larynx (voice box)
• Liver
• Mouth
• Throat
• Rectum

Alcohol and smoking or the use of tobacco products together increases this risk further. Few drinks a day may be already dangerous. As we all know in smokers, the more you drink the more you smoke and this increases the risk.

Alcohol can affect estrogen levels in a woman’s body and this may be the reason for the increased risk of breast cancer. Few drinks in a week can be sometimes too much. It is better not to drink alcohol or drink in very moderate amount to lower the risk of breast cancer.

For mouth and throat alcohol is an irritant and this damages the cells. The damaged cells try to repair themselves by changing their DNA and this may result the uncontrolled growth of the cells and thus the cancer.

Alcohol is converted into acetaldehyde in the colon by bacteria and this may be the reason for colon and rectum cancer.

Alcohol can damage the liver that results scarring and inflammation. This can be fatal.

Alcohol is not necessary for the metabolism and so without any problem one can avoid it. If you want to drink in social events drink less. A glass of beer or wine or champagne is allowed. But avoid all drinks that have high percent of alcohol.

There are many ways to enjoy life without alcohol…

Alcohol and tobacco abuse are two risk factors among many for type 2-diabetes. Most scientists agree that these two increase the risk of type 2-diabetes. As we know, there are many other risk factors which can influence type 2-diabetes. Normally you are not having all the risk factors. Some risk factors may apply to you and the others may not. Therefore, it is always good to know all the risk factors before we deeply go to alcohol and tobacco.

The type 2-diabetes risk factors include:

• Race and ethnicity
• Hereditary
• Personal history
• Age, above 40 years
• Overweight or obesity
• Waist circumference above 88 cm for women and 103 cm for men
• Diabetes during pregnancy
• Excess food intake
• Less physical activity
• Alcohol
• Tobacco smoke

Drinking moderate amounts of alcohol – two drinks a day for men and one drink a day for women – may lower the risk of diabetes. But, if you drink more it is a risk factor for type 2-diabetes. Too much alcohol can affect the pancreas and disturbs the ability to secrete insulin. In course of time this leads to type 2-diabetes.

Tobacco or tobacco smoke is as harmful as excess alcohol. Use of tobacco and tobacco products can increase the blood sugar levels and this leads to insulin resistance. The smokers have double the risk of developing type 2-diabetes when compared to nonsmokers. Passive smoking must also be completely avoided and is more dangerous than smoking.

Alcohol need not be a must every day. Never offer to persons who do not want to drink alcohol. Now and then one or two drinks or one glass beer or one glass red wine or one glass champagne is allowed. Remember always consuming more than this can make you an addict. That is why your doctor does not recommend alcohol.

Increased risk of type 2-diabetes is another important reason to stop smoking completely. It is advisable not to use any tobacco products. There is no compromise like in alcohol.

There are many causes for dry skin. Millions of people suffer dry skin in the world. The causes include:

• Dry skin might be due to a genetic condition
• Due to dry cold weather in winter
• There can be no natural lubrication of the skin and this causes dehydration of the skin
• Environmental factors like exposure to sun, weather, chemicals including cosmetics or excessive use of soaps
• Skin disease like eczema, psoriasis etc. can cause dry skin
• Poor diet with vitamins deficiency can support to form dry skin
• Drugs can have dry skin as side effect
• Diabetes or under active thyroid can cause dry skin

Food and healthy lifestyle can help to have a better skin. A good diet includes vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds and legumes. Protein from vegetables is good to skin and increase the intake of raw food. Sulphur containing foods like onion, garlic and asparagus can help to keep the skin smooth. Yellow and orange colour vegetables have many antioxidants. The beta-carotene from carrots is very valuable for skin.

Flax seed oil can be added to salads and other food which need not be cooked. Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are necessary to produce Prostaglandins which supports skin health. Vegetables and fruits contain valuable vitamin A and C. Quark, natural plain yoghurt, yeast and wheat germ are rich in pantothenic acid – vitamin B5 which is important for skin health.

Drink 2 to 3 litres of fluids everyday and if you sweat more then drink more. Water keeps the skin well hydrated.

Fried foods, processed foods, animal fats and hydrogenated oils must be avoided. Avoid heating oil and use only cold pressed oils. Junk foods, chips, products with sugar, chocolates and soft drinks must be consumed rarely and it is better to avoid them.

Caffeine and alcohol can dehydrate the body and this is bad for skin health. Avoid all soft drinks which contain caffeine.

Do not take bath in hot water and the shower or bath must be short. Moisturize your skin immediately after your bath or shower.

Grey hair is a part of human aging process. There are many different factors which play a role in greying hair. Few get grey hair when they are young. Grey hair will not make us wise, but with increasing age it is possible. There is no connection to grey hair and wisdom.

What can we do against getting grey hair? We cannot do much because the primary cause is mostly genetics. But there are ways to stop or slow down greying.

Stress is an important factor to cause premature grey hair. We are extremely busy all the time. Stress starts from kindergarten and ends when we die. We have extreme stress in the school, college, office and family. The stress a woman or man gets when she/he sees her/his first grey hair is great. Many play mad and many spend a fortune to avoid further greying.

There are other factors to avoid premature grey hair and they include:

·        Avoid all sorts of stress
·        Have healthy diet
·        Have enough, regular sleep
·        Good lifestyle
·        Avoid smoking
·        Avoid party and other illegal drugs
·        Avoid excess alcohol
·        Enough physical activity

As you see it is in your hands to avoid premature grey hair.

In our society looking young is valued much. What to do if there is grey hair? Do not spend money in wonder creams or lotions and nothing will help. The best way is to dye your hair and this could be done always without any problem.  Be careful with the dyes and check before whether you have allergy with the chemicals there.  At any cost never keep the on your head than the given time for that dye. Wash generously many times with water till the dye is completely removed. Otherwise also there will be the chance for the allergy.

Grey hair is a part of our life. If you are mentally mature it will not disturb you at all.

Fibres and antioxidants of vegetables and fruits are capable of reducing the blood pressure. Comparatively the fibres and antioxidants of fruits are more effective than those of vegetables.

Celery is known to reduce the blood pressure, but it has also sodium which can increase the pressure. Take one to two stalks and this is enough.

Garlic is also important to reduce the blood pressure and the mechanism is dilation of the arteries. Onion and garlic have adenosine which is a smooth muscle relaxant. Raw or cooked, both are effective to control the blood pressure.

All leafy vegetables are good to reduce the blood pressure. All fruits are also good. 5 to 6 servings of fruits and vegetables are good in a day.

You must have a good lifestyle. Avoid alcohol and tobacco. Keep your weight normal. Have enough physical activity.

Above all, you must avoid all forms of stress. You must know how to manage your stress well. Avoiding mental stress reduces the blood pressure and keeps it normal.

No, there is no way to make the excretion of alcohol quickly. Approximately 0.11 o/oo alcohol is excreted per hour. If you have 1.0 o/oo alcohol in your blood it takes 10 hours to be completely excreted.

After alcohol consumption never drive a car or operate a machine. It is dangerous for you and others.

If you have enough fat in your stomach alcohol binds with fat and this is not absorbed to the blood. The free alcohol only can reach the blood and brain.

If you drink alcohol then you must take a taxi to go home. It is also the duty of the host if he serves alcohol to prevent you in driving a car. By the way too much of alcohol is not good for your health. Enjoy the other wonderful things and there are many in this world.

Do not offer alcohol to youth. If somebody says “No” to alcohol respect this. Everybody think that they are having their alcohol consumption under control but many have not.

Alcohol can make you an addict and can spoil you and your family.

This is not possible. Your husband is not telling the truth.

No doctor in this world will advise somebody to take alcohol. The doctors know well that alcohol in small quantities is good and in excess bad for our health.

Alcohol can make one an addict. There are hundreds of millions of addicts in our world. They not only destroy them but also their whole family.

The calories what we take from alcohol is only empty calories and alcohol is not necessary for our metabolism.

Even the good red wine in small quantity is also not recommended by the doctors. They know well that from one glass it can become 3 and after that one bottle or more.

Talk to your husband and explain him everything. After that he has to decide.

At first go to your doctor and check the blood pressure and blood sugar. He must check also HBA1c to check the long term sugar level. If he gives medicines you must take them regularly. It is better to control creatinine, cholesterol, LDL and HDL cholesterol, triglycerides and homocysteine in your blood.

High blood pressure, diabetes and overweight are risk factors for heart attack and stroke.

Except this question I have no information from you and so I could give you only general advises. You must reduce your weight. Normal weight is, your weight in cm – 100 = Kilos. Reduce the amount of meat and meat products. Twice in a week fish is good. Eat more fresh vegetables and fruits and reduce the intake of carbohydrates.

Change your lifestyle. Avoid smoking, alcohol and stress. Daily go for a quick walk or better to a fitness studio for thrice in a week.

Diabetes and the drugs for high blood pressure and high sugar can affect your sexual life. They can cause erection problems. Consult with your doctor.

We need medicines if we are sick. But the side effects are always there whether it is over-the-counter or prescribed drugs. If you use them properly it may be helpful to you. Over-the-counter medicine is safe when it is used properly.

Even if you take over-the-counter medicines consult your doctor first, he could check and tell you whether the organs necessary to metabolize these drugs are healthy or not. After that also, it is only trial and error to find out the right dose. Here, your doctor decides what you have to take and how long.

This is also applicable to all the over-the-counter medicines. Consult your doctor, get all the information from him and ask him also the maximum amount could be taken in a day. Never take more than necessary.

When taking medicine you must avoid alcohol completely. You can manage nicely, but do not forget the dose makes the gift. You can also get information from your pharmacist. If the drug is not helping for two or three days go to your doctor immediately.

You can try your grandmother’s methods and most of them are good.

The immune system is body’s defence against bacteria, viruses and other foreign organisms. It is a very complex system which has to function properly to protect us from the harmful bacteria and other organisms in our environment that may infect body.

What is the relationship between immune system and food?

Your genetic make up influences your immune system and so do the environmental factors. From the scientific studies it is increasingly clear that you can manipulate your immune system by what you eat. Foods, containing vitamins, minerals and other unique compounds, can stimulate immune functioning, increase your resistance to various bacterial and viral infections, as well as cancerous growths which flourish or die according to the strength and operation of immune mechanisms.

How food can influence your immune system?

What you eat can strongly influence the performance of white blood cells, the frontline soldiers against infection and cancer. The B-cells produce critical antibodies which rush to destroy bacteria, virus and tumor cells. Many research documents of various foods and food components help to control the amount of white blood cells and their strength.

The quality of food must be good to prevent infections. Raw or lightly cooked eggs, shellfish or soft cheese may contain bacteria. Therefore, we must be always careful with all the food because the danger of infection may be everywhere.

Is vegetarian immune system better than others?

Fruits and vegetables have always a good influence on immune system because there are numerous substances, including vitamin C and beta-carotene and vegetarians have more strong immune defences. Vegetarians have more beta-carotene in blood than meat eaters and it has a documented influence on immune system.

Eat enough spinach, carrots and other fruits and vegetables rich in beta-carotene. Pulses, beans, nuts and seeds are also very important.

What is the role of our normal yoghurt here?

Eat some yoghurt every day and you do something good for your body and it is a known fighter against disease. Approximately eating 200 gram yoghurt daily can prevent cold and diarrhea in adults and elders. Yoghurt in animals and human beings stimulates the activity of natural killer cells which destroy tumor cells. The heated and frozen yoghurts, in which the bacterial culture is often killed, could strengthen our immune system.

What is shiitake mushroom?

Shiitake is a big, brown and fleshy mushroom of Asian origin. It contains an antiviral substance called lentinan which exhibits strong immunostimulating activity. It is used in Chinese traditional medicine and it can modify cells to resist the spreading of lung cancer cells. Thus shiitake mushroom may help immune system to fight as well as to prevent cancer.

Is garlic a weapon against microbes?

Garlic is a fighter of bacteria, virus and cancer cells and it stimulates the potencies of T-lymphocytes and macrophages, the main cells in immune functions. Garlic extract helps macrophages to generate more free radicals to kill microbes and tumor cells. It is a cheaper weapon to strengthen our immune system.

Zinc, is it really an immune element?

Your immune system cannot function properly if you fail to eat food rich in zinc. It helps to strengthen the immune sytem, including the production of antibodies, T-cells and other white blood cell activities.

What about drinking, I mean water or soft drinks?

Drinking plenty of fluid can help to prevent infection; it keeps your mouth moist and healthy and flushes out kidneys and bladder which prevents the build-up of waste in our body where the bacteria can grow. Three to four liter of fluid does good to our body but at least 70% must be drinking water.

Fat and immune system, what is the correct way?

Reducing fat in the diet is important not only for weight control but also seems to influence the function of our immune system. Diets that are high in fat seem to depress the immune response and thus increase the risk of infections. Reducing fat content in the diet can decrease the risk of infections. Moreover, it is not the amount of fat but also the origin of fat is important. Food rich in monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fatty acids are fatty fish, nuts soya or linseed oil.

Immune system and alcohol, where are we now?

Drinking little alcohol, especially wine, can boost your resistance to some infections and the reason may be, it can destroy or disable disease-producing organisms. Wine can kill any number of bacteria, including Salmonella, E. coli and Staphylococcus which are the common cause of food poisoning. Wine may be better because of grape skin and fermentation but other alcoholic beverages in small amount can destroy unwanted bacteria. Consuming contaminated food and alcohol at the same time may lessen the chance of becoming sick. For example, eating raw oysters may not be safe even with alcohol and avoidance is the best solution.

What about probiotic supplements?

These may be good. These come under food supplements; so no clinical studies and side effects. Nobody knows how the standardisation is done. We have to wait for further research.

What is the relationship between infections and kisses?

Millions of bacteria are transferred from one mouth to the other and there may be many harmful bacteria causing infections.

Do not kiss a child in the lips because the risk of infection is great.

The nose has several blood vessels and it is situated in a vulnerable position on the face. The bleeding me much or it may be a minor complication.

The nose bleedings can occur spontaneously when the nasal membranes dry out and crack. This is common when the climate is dry or in winter months. The household heaters dry the air in the home dry. In winter months there are more nose bleedings and the reasons are frequent respiratory infections, frequent temperature and humidity fluctuations and the vast temperature difference from outside and the heated homes. The common causes include:

• Infection
• Injury, including from nose picking
• High blood pressure
• Excess alcohol
• Allergic and non-allergic rhinitis (runny or stuffy nose with or without swelling)
• Use of blood thinning medicines like warfarin or aspirin or any anti-inflammatory medicine

The nose bleeding could be stopped in the following ways:

• Pinch the nose together between the thump and index finger
• Press the nose firmly toward the face
• Apply ice to nose and cheeks. The ice must be wrapped in a towel
• Do not lay, do not put your head between your legs and sit quietly
• Hold the nose at least for 5 minutes. It should be repeated till the bleeding stops
• Lean forward slightly with head tilted forward to avoid the blood from entering the sinuses and throat

If bleeding continues you must go to your doctor. There are some precautionary measures to prevent the repeating of nose bleeding and they include:

• Take rest with 30 to 45 degrees elevated head
• Do not blow your nose
• If you have to sneeze, open your mouth so that the air can escape out through the mouth
• Avoid bending and straining to lift heavy things. The head must always be higher than the heart
• Do not strain during bowel movements, if necessary take stool softener
• The food must be soft and cold and avoid hot food or drinks for at least 24 hours
• After talking to your doctor avoid blood thinning medicines during this period if possible
• Use the ointment which your doctor prescribes
• Avoid smoking

You have to go to the doctor or to an emergency clinic if the bleeding cannot be stopped or if the blood loss is large or if you feel weak or faint from blood loss.

Your doctor may use nasal packs to stop nose bleedings if the above said conservative measures fail.

Weak lower oesophageal muscles which may also relax too often allow the acid to get into the oesophagus. When the lining of the oesophagus comes in contact with too much of acid from the stomach oesophagus it is injured and produces burning pain. This result is heartburn.

You can prevent heartburn by doing the following things:

• Avoid large meals
• Avoid high fatty food
• It is better to drink a small glass of water at the end of the meal to wash down the acid which might be splashing up into the oesophagus.
• High fibre foods reduce heartburn
• You can drink heartburn friendly beverages like water, mineral water, low fat milk and juices of noncitrus fruits. Decaffeinated tea also helps. Soda, citrus fruit juices, alcoholic beverages, coffee, tea and cola can increase the acid production in the stomach and also to relax the lower oesophageal muscle.
• Fat around the midsection of the body is also a risk factor which can press the stomach and send the acid upwards.
• Chocolate, coffee, alcohol, fatty foods, tomato, citrus fruits and their juices, hot chilli and black pepper must be avoided.
• Chewing gum with no peppermint flavour helps to produce more saliva and the bicarbonate present there can neutralise the acid.
• Avoid alcohol and smoking.
• Give enough time between meals
• Exercises which differ from individual to individual may help to decrease the heartburn.
• Avoid lying down two to three hours after eating; otherwise it can help the acid splash upwards.

Three heavy meals and frequently eating do not ease heartburn. A small meal is advisable. Heavy meal means more acid reflux and small meal means less acid reflux.

When you sleep your pillow must be six to eight inches higher when you lie down so that the head is elevated and a peaceful sleep may be possible.

No, you need not avoid coconut completely; it has a lot of saturated fatty acids and other nutrients which our body needs. Think of selenium which is important in free radical scavenging and excretions of heavy metals is present in the highest amount here.

Moreover, we need some saturated fatty acids for our body, my personal experience is, avoid meat and meat products, all the processed foods and also the fast or junk foods, then you can eat enough coconuts because of hidden saturated fatty acids in these foods. In places where coconut is used in all foods, the people are not getting more heart attacks than in other places.

Avoid the other risk factors, such as smoking, overweight, excessive sweets, high fat meals, excessive alcohol, laziness, stress and homocysteine; then you can eat as much coconut you like, this is my personal experience. The saturated fatty acids in coconut are only 30% of the total fat and are not long chain fatty acids, which may have more adverse effects, but are short and middle chain fatty acids.

Sometimes, theoretical knowledge, practical experience and research may give significant results than the believed facts. In these fields more research is needed to understand many riddles about food and our metabolism.

Mostly when we talk about red wine we also talk about the French paradox. It was not well understood for a long time.

It is cleared exactly now. The French eat the fattiest foods in the world with lot of saturated fats and cholesterol, but have lesser heart attack than the others who consume much less cholesterol.

The French drink very rarely water alone but mix it always with red wine, half and half and drink. Here it is not the role played by alcohol but the chemical which gives the red colour to red wine, resveratrol, which reduces the amount of cholesterol in the blood. Moreover alcohol in small quantity helps to widen the arteries and thus heart does not need to work hard. Small quantity means, one glass wine added to one more glass of water. Be careful, only because of resveratrol and other polyphenols as antioxidants, red wine has this quality.

Case Study

More than 20 years ago I had the cholesterol value of 249 mg and my doctor told that I have to try to reduce this cholesterol. I had no interest to change my food habit as I was travelling lot from on congress to other. So I have decided to try with red wine.

My choice was a dry, red French wine. The alcohol content was 12.5 vol% and I drank everyday in the evening 180 ml of that. After 14 days my cholesterol value was 180 mg. This was a test by a clinical toxicologist who had all the facilities to test. I had no patience, that why 180 ml.

For an average person the amount should be 100 ml which he could take in the evening. It should be taken like a medicine.

Caution – Alcohol is habit forming and makes you an addict. Dry alcoholics must avoid alcohol completely

500 ml per day, three to four times a week is good for health for men and up to 300 ml now and then for women is good for health. This is amount of alcohol helps to reduce your blood pressure. If you take more the blood vessels become narrow, heart has to pump hard and the blood pressure increases.

The nutrients in 100 g beer include:

• Water – 90.6 g
• Alcohol - 3.5 g
• Protein – 0.5 g
• Fat – nil
• Carbohydrates – 2.9 g
• Organic acids – Malic acid 6 mg, lactic acid 3 mg, oxalic acid 2 mg
• Fibre – nil
• Minerals - 0.2 g – sodium 5 mg, potassium 40 mg, magnesium 9 mg, calcium 4 mg, iron 40 micro g, copper 40 micro g, zinc 20 micro g, iodide 1 micro g.
• Vitamins - vitamins B1, B2, B6, nicotine amide, pantothenic acid, biotin, folic acid – all are only in traces
• Purine – 14 mg

One gram alcohol has 9 calories. These are dead calories; not at all useful to our body.

Women you have less enzyme to metabolize alcohol. Moreover the alcohol is absorbed quickly and reaches the brain also quickly. Drink only socially, this means drink less.

The alcohol free beers could contain also up to 0.5% alcohol.

It is very simple, make a Family Tree and write there along with other personal particulars the cause of deaths of grandparents and other forefathers including heart attack and other heart diseases, stroke or diabetes or cancers.
Explain the children smoking is one of the most important risk factors for these diseases and their death. Whenever they visit their uncle’s or other friend’s family the Family Trees of these families should also be shown to them with all these risk factors. With this I have experienced many good results in Hamburg.

A child understands these dangers very quickly and keeps it in mind for ever. It is simple, costs no money and to have this information are useful to the future generations also.

It is applicable to all unwanted and wanted drugs including alcohol.

Yes, in small quantities, about 180 ml per day, it helps to reduce the heart attack risk, but who can guarantee me that the person will not drink more.

One glass becomes two, three, a bottle and more. Therefore, it is better to eat reasonably and have enough physical activities than red wine to reduce the heart attack risk

Red wine has resveratrol, the red substance and many other poly phenols which are very strong anti-oxidants. Little alcohol helps our blood vessels to enlarge and the heart has to work less. Therefore, the blood pressure comes down. On the contrary, if you drink more alcohol the blood vessels become narrow and the heart has to pump strong and the blood pressure goes up. This is the reason why we say social drinking is healthy

What will happen if you drink some alcoholic beverages with straw?

If a small amount of alcohol is taken in the mouth quickly, it is distributed to the whole mucous membrane which could also absorb alcohol and it goes into the blood quickly and you feel it soon. It is not advisable to take with straw.

Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger...

The distribution of the alcohol in the body is not the same in different individuals and it is also dependent of the weight.

The genes play a role here. But, if one could drink more means his health is also more in danger and he is never a super man. Drinking in empty stomach is bad because the alcohol enters quickly to the blood and to the brain.

The women must be very careful with alcohol, because they produce fewer enzymes to metabolize alcohol, thus become quickly drunk. Never drink like a man; it is dangerous for you in all the ways.

Whether you drink more or less a maximum of 0.11/oo (0.11 per mille) will be excreted per hour. If you have an alcohol concentration of 0.8/oo in your blood it takes 8 hours to excrete. That means if you drink more in the late evening next morning also you have rest alcohol in your blood. This could affect your reaction time and the chance of making a traffic accident is high. Do not drive a car or operate a machine if you are under the influence of alcohol.

There are no medicines or any other plant products which could excrete the alcohol quickly from your body. There many persons in internet who promise quick excretion with their product for very high price and it is a lie.
