Overweight and obesity is a big health problem at present. In all the countries the youth have problem with their weight. Young women have eating disorders or overweight. Young men have problem with his T-Shirt when the weather becomes mild. The health insurances say that almost 30% of the persons treated for weight problems are below 18 years old. The youth must be given the right information so that they know what they do and what is right. I try to explain some of the important general points from today onwards.

The light food products have mostly low fat. But, this does not mean that they have low calories. They may contain more sugar or artificial sweeteners. More sugar means more calories. Artificial sweeteners are very dangerous. They give the body the feeling that food is coming. Correspondingly insulin is produced and this cannot simply disappear. It lowers the present blood sugar. You are hungrier and eat more. It is better to avoid light food products.

I have seen in persons who drank more light soft drinks significant increase of weight. Moreover, artificial sweeteners are given to animals to increase their weight quickly. There are no long-term studies with artificial sweeteners and few are risk factors for cancer.

Artificial sweeteners are also chemicals and the liver has to work more to eliminate them.

Consult your dietician and select the right food for you and it is easy to lose weight.

1000 calories food or eating the half of the usual food is the mostly used method to reduce weight by many including the youth. The body gets few calories and so it uses the fat reserves of the body. The weight comes down quickly. You may ask where the problem is. There are two important problems here that you must understand well.

The body gets not enough calories and so it slows down the metabolism. This means that you need less energy to do things than before. The body burns few calories compared to the time when you eat normal. Therefore, the weight reduction is not there always. In course of time you may even gain weight.

Secondly, when you start eat normal the empty fat reserve cells are filled very quickly. You gain weight and it goes more than the weight you had before you started your diet. This is the so called Yo Yo effect. Yo Yo effect is a process in which the dieter is initially successful in achieving weight loss but is unsuccessful in maintaining the weight loss long-term. The dieter begins to gain the weight back when they eat normal. The dieter tries to lose weight once again and the cycle begins once again.

Try to understand our food well and plan well to reduce your weight. Slow weight loss is the best. Here the exercises and physical activities play a vital role. Our children learn so many complicated things without problem, but they don’t learn about food when they are young because we do not teach them. We must teach them properly and that is worth doing. Children will not have any problem to understand and once understood they do always right. Start in your family today to teach the children about food and diet!!!

There are many soft drinks in our world. There are many chemicals present in these soft drinks. These chemicals may have adverse effects on our health. Of course the major part is water, but all the other things present are not healthy.

The soft drink contains many chemicals and they include:

Sugar – soft drink manufactures are the largest single user of refined sugar in our world. Sugar increases insulin levels. The result can be diabetes, high blood pressure, high blood triglycerides. Weight gain and premature aging and many other health problems go to the account of sugar.

Aspartame – many diet soft drinks contain this chemical, as a sugar substitute. Many side effects are associated with aspartame intake. Weight gain, diabetes, birth defects and many other health problems go to aspartame’s account. If stored in a warm place for a long time it is automatically converted in to methanol which is converted to formaldehyde and formic acid, which are carcinogens. Acesulfame-K and Saccharin are the other artificial sweeteners mostly used.

Phosphoric acid – it may interfere with calcium metabolism. The result may be softening of bones, teeth and osteoporosis. Too much of this can affect the utilization of nutrients.

Carbon dioxide – it is used to produce carbonated soft drinks. The adverse effects are acidosis and adverse effects in calcium metabolism. Brushing your teeth after drinking an acidic soft drink can increase the damage to your tooth enamel and dissolving down the gum line.

Caffeine – excess caffeine is not good for our health. Two cups of coffee per day is good but too much from the soft drinks are not good.

Obesity is a big problem and one of the main reasons is soft drinks.

Moreover, the taste what we enjoy with soft drinks are also only chemicals. It is better to avoid all soft drinks. If it is not possible now and then a glass is good. Particularly we must inform the youth about the dangers of soft drinks. If explained properly surely they will understand the problems with the soft drinks.

Pure drinking water and fresh fruit juices are the best drinks.

A friend of mine wanted to know the answer for this question from the internet. For few days he read many articles and finally contacted me.

I do not know what is right and what is wrong because I could believe everything written there was his sentence to me. This problem we all have. As we know every coin has two sides, one is good and the other one is bad.

There is no wonder food in this world. All have their both sides. Raw chocolate, if not heated, has good antioxidants. But the problem is one could become addictive to this. Many eat this regularly in big quantities. This is my concern about them. Few times a week, each time not more than three tablespoons, are good for our health.

Addictions can lead to obesity. Vegetables, fruits, pulses, nuts and seeds contain also enough antioxidants and so it is not necessary to eat or use raw-chocolate in excess.

Milk chocolates are processed food and we should not eat them in excess. I have seen many addicts to chocolates. We had a colleague who never brought her money-purse to the office so that in the railway station she could not buy chocolates in the morning and in the evening. One day she told me that she got up at 2 a.m. in the morning, drove in her car to the next petrol bunk to buy chocolates because she could not wait till morning.

You must buy the raw-chocolates from good sources; otherwise the possibility of contamination is always there. Before buying ask them whether they have heated the cacao beans. Only with fermentation of the beans the chocolate taste comes.

There is no proof for the aphrodisiac properties of chocolates.

The dose makes the poison.

The contraction of voluntary muscles in human beings take places by the mutual sliding of two sets of interdigitating filaments. The thick one containing the protein myosin and the thin one containing the protein actin.

Muscle contraction is controlled by the central nervous system, this means brain and spinal cord. Brain initiates the voluntary muscle contractions and spinal cord initiates the involuntary reflexes.

There are three types of muscle tissues in our body and they are skeletal, cardiac and smooth, the blood vessels muscles. The skeletal muscles are in charge of our movement.

Coming to the problem of Sakthikkumaran V. the back pain in the lower part has many reasons, overweight and obesity and less physical activity.

The human beings are created by God to walk with four legs. The spinal cord is produced by God to this purpose. In the evolution we have two legs and two hands. This has several advantages and few disadvantages. The major disadvantage is the problems with the spinal cord. It is actually the problems of the small muscles supporting the spines. Because of its unnatural upright position these muscles hardens and gets damaged. There starts the problem with the nerves touch the sharp bones. We have to stretch our spinal cord everyday. The 160 muscles what we have in the back must work everyday properly and we must help them by stretching.

You have to talk to your orthopaedic doctor and physiotherapist. In cases where the damage is already there the neorologist is the expert to do the treatment with others together.

For the last 60 years I am physically handicapped with almost no muscles in my legs. Even today, with 62 years I have no back pain. The reason is the good physiotherapist who taught me this simple exercises after my foot-correction operation in 1974. It is only five minutes exercise of stretching the spinal cord and the small muscles which support it.

Am I expecting too much from you all for your health? 2010 is going to begin soon and start doing this exercise from 1st January 2010.

It is very easy, eat metabolism based individual diet and do few simple exercises for your stomach muscles and you could achieve this very quickly.

Weight gain is a common side effect of different medicines and if it is the case, then you have less chance. Consult your doctor to get another medicine which does not have this side effect if possible. With the help of your doctor find out the minimum but effective dose of the medicine and then it is possible to reduce some weight.

If you have high blood pressure or taking any other medicines, at first talk to your doctor about the side-effects of this medicine. Weight increase is one of the many side-effects, it is very difficult to reduce your weight, but not impossible.

60 kg should be your normal weight, 15 kg you have to melt, but it should be done slowly if you want success in your effort. An individual diet plan could be made for your breakfast, lunch, dinner, the in-between snacks or fruits and recommendation for your fluid intake.

The first two kilos will go very quickly within a few days because it is only water, do not reduce the amount of your meals drastically, this makes the brain to tell the body to reduce the speed of the metabolism, you burn less calories and you wait sadly for weeks or months without any success.

Consult your doctor about the exercise you could do and your trainer plan and accompany your exercise programme according to that.

Reduce the amount of your meals slowly, increase your exercises also slowly, I am in contact with you to give the correct direction or tips and the result will be very encouraging.

Get an appointment, come after filling the questionnaire, we talk and make a diet plan for you in reasonable time.

Risk Factors

Risk Factors are several conditions which makes it likely to get a particular disease. Always remember that having one or even more risk factors does not necessarily mean one will develop breast cancer. At the same time many women with breast cancer have no known risk factors. That means we do not know now many risk factors yet and we must look critically everything which may cause breast cancer.

The known Risk Factors include:

• Inherited genes which increase cancer risk – certain gene mutations, the most common genes are BRCA1 and BACR2.
• A personal history – if you have in one breast the chance of getting in the other breast is very high.
• A family history – if mother, sister or daughter has breast cancer the risk is more. But remember many of the diseased have no family history of breast cancer.
• Increasing age – risk of breast cancer increases with age.
• Late first pregnancy – if one gives birth her first baby after 35 years, the chances of developing breast cancer may increase.
• Overweight and Obesity – these increase the risk of breast cancer
• Early puberty and menstruation - getting first menstruation till 12 is considered a breast cancer risk.
• Late menopause – if the beginning of menopause is after 55 years, this increases the risk of developing breast cancer.
• Postmenopausal hormone therapy – women who take the combination therapy with estrogen and progesterone to treat the symptoms of menopause have an increased risk of breast cancer.
• Oral contraceptives – women with many known risk factors must avoid the anti baby pills with hormones.
• Radiation exposure – if you receive radiation therapy or taken X-rays at any time in your life, later it is a risk factor for breast cancer. Electricity power lines, all radiation sources including cell phones and above all the cell phone towers radiate much and women with risk factor must avoid this. In these cases a plausible scientific analysis is possible after many decades and therefore it is better to avoid.
• Food habit – it plays an important role. One must eat what her/his metabolism needs.
• Alcohol – avoid too much of alcohol
• Smoking
• Being a woman – it is the biggest risk factor. If you understand everything it is a manageable risk for many.

Symptoms of breast cancer

• A lump or thickening in the breast which feels different from the surrounding breast tissues
• Discharge from the nipple
• Inverted nipple
• Flaking or peeling of the nipple skin
• Change in the shape or size of the breast
• Changes in the breast skin
• The breast skin becomes red or orange

In many women the recent mammogram may be normal; even then, if you have the symptoms go to the doctor immediately.
If we diagnose earlier there are many good treatments to heal you.

Risk factors one can control

They include:

• Diet
• Weight
• Alcohol consumption
• Smoking
• Exposure to estrogens, the female hormones, without break as in hormone replacement therapy in post menopause for many years including xeno-estrogens
• Oral contraceptives – it is big business. There are many alternative methods
• Anxiety
• Stress
• Exercise

Learn to avoid these by changing one’s lifestyle. This is worth doing for your health.
